Pewter Wine Funnel - Customer Review

2004-02-17

We all have them, of course. Those most prized possessions we've collected over the years that, because of their perfect functionality or design, are just the best that ever were. Cutting across various interests, big or small, expensive or even free, they become a repertoire of absolute must-haves. No civilized human being on the leeward side of convenience should ever be without them.

Among mine I number my Davidoff double-bladed cigar cutter, my Leifheit Swing-Away can opener, the French cookie baking mats, one of those angled divot repair tools they give away at Disney Golf Resorts, my twenty-six year old Dreizack counter-rotating corkscrew and, for more than three decades, an antique crystal wine decant I bought in Chartres while visiting its cathedral. All but the wine decant continue to occupy their places in my personal hall of fame. The crystal wine decant, however, has been recently and summarily retired. Somebody built a better (by far) mousetrap!

"Wine Funnel" - most useful accessory for wine drinkers

Those familiar with a decant (wine funnel, if you must - and Hugh Johnson himself does) know that it is, second only to the corkscrew, the most useful accessory in all oenodom. The stodgy among us might have you believe decanting benefits only the oldest of red vintages. Not true, Grasshopper, not true. To my taste, all red wines, but especially young red wines, benefit from the oxygenation that occurs during the decanting process. I do admit to enjoying the brash, stirring nose and flavors of a Beaujolais Nouveau without decanting but that is my only exception and another story completely.

Up to now, a well-designed decant would channel the wine poured into it down the side of your decanter in a gentle trickle, a single stream imparting fuller flavor while taking the unwelcome edge off an aggressive offering. Enter, cellar right, from far off stage in distant Malaysia, a new, yes revolutionary (even mind-jarring to this jaded writer) Duke of Decant, Prince of Pour wine decant/wine funnel call-it-anything-you-wantferheavensakes-but-get-one-now!

"Wine Funnel in Action" - the oxygenation process adds flavour to your wine

The company that makes this new marvel is none other than Royal Selangor, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a venerated old company that has for over a century produced hand-crafted pewter of unsurpassed quality and exquisite design. Its many offerings include an enviable design grouping inspired by the magnificent collections of London's Victoria and Albert Museum. From their Wine Celebration Collection, this wine funnel's gentle sweeping design has its own physical beauty, to be sure, but its true "inner beauty" is its simplicity and absolute optimization of functionality.

Unlike traditional (read, "now outdated") decants which curve towards the side of the bottle at their business end, this masterpiece remains militarily straight down into the bottle. And now the miracle of miracles: at the bottom of its business end there is no hole! Instead, there are five tiny ports or outlets just above the bottom that direct the wine in a star-shaped pattern to all sides of the decanter. It no longer matters what shape or size decanter is being used, this is the perfect decant for them all - even an orange juice pitcher! I now wish someone had taken a picture of my face the first time I used it. That look of astonishment and discovery turning into a bemused and slant-grinned, "Wow!" have too long been absent from this old mug.
